Stablecoins zijn een type cryptocurrency die zijn ontworpen om een stabile waarde te behouden door gekoppeld te worden aan een andere activa, zoals een fiatvaluta (bijvoorbeeld de Amerikaanse dollar) of een grondstof (zoals goud). Het idee is dat stablecoins de voordelen van digitale valuta combineren met de stabiliteit van traditionele valuta, waardoor ze aantrekkelijk zijn voor zowel investeerders als gebruikers. Er zijn verschillende soorten stablecoins, afhankelijk van de manier waarop ze zijn gebackerd: 1. Fiat-gebacked stablecoins: Deze stablecoins zijn direct gelinkt aan een fiatvaluta en worden meestal 1-op-1 ondersteund door reserves van de fiatvaluta. Voorbeeld: Tether (USDT) en USD Coin (USDC). 2. Cryptocurrency-gebacked stablecoins: Deze stablecoins zijn gedekt door andere cryptocurrencies en gebruiken slimme contracten om de waarde te stabiliseren. Voorbeeld: DAI is een cryptocurrency-gebacked stablecoin die wordt ondersteund door onderpand in de vorm van Ethereum en andere digitale activa. 3. Algoritmische stablecoins: Deze stablecoins behouden hun waarde door middel van algoritmen en slimme contracten die de circulatie van tokens aanpassen op basis van vraag en aanbod. Ze zijn niet direct ondersteund door een onderpand. Voorbeeld: TerraUSD (UST) (let op: TerraUSD is omgevallen in 2022). Stablecoins worden vaak gebruikt voor verschillende doeleinden, zoals het uitvoeren van transacties, het versturen van waarde, het beschermen tegen prijsvolatiliteit van andere cryptocurrencies, en als een manier om rente te verdienen wanneer ze worden gestald op bepaalde platforms.
