Sharding

Sharding is a mechanism used to divide a blockchain network, computer network or database into two or more units. The goal is to distribute the computer and storage load of the network across a broader set of devices or Nodes, to increase system-wide throughput and transaction speed. Each node only stores information pertaining to its specific shard or partition, and since each node is only responsible for handling a fraction of the network's total transaction load, the network's overall processing capabilities and resiliency can be vastly improved.
